Why Movember is Important to Me

Will Strohl's Movember Picture I am one of thousands of people around the world participating in an event called Movember.  Between my previous post about Movember, Chris Hammond’s post introducing it, and the amazing amount of activity about it on the various social networks, I am sure this isn’t the first time that you’ve heard about this cause.  However, just in case you were on vacation or something, I will give you a quick summary…

What is Movember?

This is an international event that happens every month of November, originally in Australia.  Basically, men around the world agree to start the month clean-shaven, and spend the next 30 days growing a mustache – also known as a “Mo.”  This event is meant to create awareness and raise funds to donate to help fight cancer in men.  You can think of it as the male version of National Breast Cancer month.  Even if you don’t want to or can’t grow a mustache, you can donate money to help benefit organizations like Livestrong and the Prostate Cancer Foundation.

What’s In It For Me?

My last picture with my GrandfatherSome of you may know from my post about my Grandfather, that I lost him last year to cancer.  What I haven’t publicly discussed is how I also lost one of my uncles when he was just 16 years old to cancer.  I was only about a toddler when it happened, but I can still remember fragments of him.  Cancer has claimed the lives of many thousands of people each year.  This has hit home to nearly every family in the world.  What do I get out of this?  It’s simple.  I get to help keep the memories of my loved ones alive by honoring their memory to help others that will find themselves in this situation in the future.  Hopefully, you and I both can so something help prevent cancer, and maybe even eventually find a cure.

My Challenge to YOU!

On my first day of publicly announcing my participation, I challenged everyone with getting my donation pool to $100.  As a reward, I promised a picture of my resulting “Mo” on my blog for all of you to laugh at.  Until then, there is a black out on all online pictures of me.

I have never even attempted to grow a Mo in my life before due to the known level of amusement that it will bring to those around me, at my expense.

Thanks to some of you, I actually reached the $100 goal in less than 8 hours!  So, I had to raise the stakes.

For $500 donated to my campaign, I will also allow all of the followers of my blog and twitter to vote on the pose that I should take my end-of-the-month Mo picture with.  I am currently at $466 as of this writing.  So…

Should you all prove to be true cancer-fighting rock stars and get my campaign to $1000, I have another pay-off for you…  If you are able to get my campaign to a whopping $1000, I will not only post a picture and allow everyone to vote for an end of month pose…  I will also do the following:

  • Anyone with a donation of $100 or more will receive an 8x10 copy of my horrible end-of-month mustache from my online photo
  • I will wear my disgustingly ugly Mo through the month of December!

Those previous two promises only apply if we get my Movember campaign donations to over $1000.  So please make sure you donate today, and share the donation page with all of your friends and family.  Remember, this is all in good fun, but more importantly – it’s for a GREAT cause.
