DotNetNuke 5.01.00 – Now With Site Map Priorities!

In terms of SEO (search engine optimization), one of the biggest issues with DotNetNuke® has been that the site map it generates assigns the same priority to every single page in the portal.  The priority should be a value between 0.0 and 1.0, but historically DNN has assigned every page the priority of 0.5.  If you submit your site map to Google, and then check the parsed results later, you will see an error like shown below.

Google Webmaster Tools - Sitemap Priority Warning

This is shown to you as a warning and not an error for two reasons:

  1. No errors were actually encountered
  2. There are actually use cases where this might be intended, and be correct

If you are serious about generating organic traffic to your DNN site, then SEO should be something very close to your heart.  As such, you may have already sought out 3rd party and/or internal solutions to fix the site map priority problem.  Luckily, that is no longer necessary.  The DNN team has added the Site Map Priority as a Page Setting.  Hooray!

Page Settings - Site Map Priority

Once you upgrade to DNN version 5.01.00 (after it’s out of Beta), simply update each page with the appropriate priority value.
