Reminder: South Florida Code Camp 2009 This Saturday

First thing's first... For all of you tweeple out there, I have declared that we use #soflcc for the tweeting for the day. Don't know what I'm talking about? Join Twitter, and see what the fuss is about. ;)

Today is Super Bowl Sunday, and in just a few more days, the next South Florida Code Camp will kick-off.  I am very excited about this code camp, as we will have one of the most important tracks, ever.

There will be a DotNetNuke track, but not just any DNN track.  This particular DNN track comes on the heels of the most significant release of DotNetNuke, version 5 - codenamed Cambrian.  Version 5 brings with it so many incredible updates, not the least of which is the separation of the Admin modules from the Admin menu, allowing administrators to assign permissions to admin modules as they see fit.

There are many other improvements as well, and there were a handful of Florida DNN'ers hand-picked to illustrate this in a new Wrox book, titled Professional DotNetNuke 5.  This book is already available on Amazon and Wiley.  All of these authors will be speaking at this code camp, highlighting their respective chapters.

There is something else that is VERY cool too!  Attendees to the DNN sessions will be able to receive a whopping 40% discount on the two new Wrox books!!!  The other book is Professional DotNetNuke Module Programming by Mitchel Sellers.  That is nearly half off of the original price of the book!  You certainly cannot beat that...

On a side note, Mitchel will be presenting to the ODUG on May 5th.  We are honored that he is flying down to speak to us.

Here is a quick run-down of the DotNetNuke sessions.  Note, that there was a change in the final session. Tracy Wittenkeller from T-WORX had to step aside for this code camp.  We are going to miss having him.

Session 1 @ 8:30 AM - DotNetNuke 5: Introduction & Overview by Brian Scarbeau
This session will review an Introduction to DotNetNuke and some of the new features that comes with DNN 5. Learn how to install DNN and learn how to create pages and put modules on your pages. Learn how to get free skins and modules for your site. Finally, learn how to create your own module using Open-Smart Module.

Session 2 @ 9:50 AM - DotNetNuke 5: Architecture & API by Darrell Hardy
Darrell Hardy, a co-author of the upcoming Professional DotNetNuke 5 book by Wrox goes over some of the most important areas of the architecture in the newest version of DotNetNuke. DNN 5 has many new features and back-end functionality that often goes overlooked.

Session 3 @ 11:10 AM - DotNetNuke 5: Module Development by Stan Schultes
Stan Schultes will begin with a quick technical overview of DotNetNuke, and a discussion of why you might build a custom DNN module. Demos will include how to install the DNN portal on a development machine, and how to install a custom module into the portal. Then we'll dive into setting up Visual Studio 2008 for module development and demonstrate how to install a module source package and run it in design mode. Finally, we'll walk through the process of developing a custom module using the sample module to provide details, and we'll see some development tips & tricks along the way. This is a 300-level session - some experience with DotNetNuke will be assumed.

Session 4 @ 1:20 PM - DotNetNuke 5: Pure CSS Skinning by Ryan Morgan
Ryan Morgan, co-author of the upcoming Professional DotNetNuke 5 book by Wrox shows us how to create skins using "Pure CSS" techniques. In this session, Ryan will demonstrate advanced skinning techniques in DotNetNuke 5. The session covers writing valid and clean code with XHTML, the new Super Stylesheets in DNN 5 that give a starting point for pure CSS skinning, using the new object token format and considerations for making search engine optimized skins. If there’s time at the end, we will also review a few of Ryan’s favorite client side widgets that come with the new version of the framework.

Session 5 @ 2:40 PM - DotNetNuke 5: Widgets by Will Strohl
Will Strohl, contributing Technical Editor of Professional DotNetNuke 5 by Wrox gives an overview and functional demonstration of what widgets are included in DotNetNuke 5, and how to work with them.  Additionally, we will walk you through how to create your very own widgets.

Session 6 @ 4:00 PM - DotNetNuke Chalk Talk by Darrell Hardy, Ryan Morgan, and Will Strohl
All of the DotNetNuke speakers that have spoke during the day will be presenting a chalk talk together about DotNetNuke 5. We will show you some tips and tricks in managing DNN, speak about DNN consulting, and present ways to sell DotNetNuke to your clients or management.

There is still time to register for the code camp.  Be sure to register ASAP!  We will see you there...
